Reflections From a Murky Pond

The current cause célèbre or, at least, shouted slogan of America’s domestic enemies is “income inequality.” Right now they’re appearing as if they are really incensed that the poor in America, who are now a permanent portion of the population, haven’t had their average incomes increase as much as the wealthier have.

That’s right; they’re complaining that the poor aren’t improving their lot as much as the wealthier are, not that the poor are poorer.

And so, of course, they’re yammering for the government to force those who’ve made more money to pay that money out to the poorer people through taxes and various and sundry laws and regulations designed to to give the poor a bigger slice of the mythical pie.

Do not bother to lie to others or yourself; these plans and proposals are all governmental confiscation of private property in order for redistribution. Yet what crimes have the successful committed to deserve having their property confiscated? Have they stolen this wealth from the poor? Have they committed some heinous act beyond being more successful than some of the other residents of the nations?

The simple answer is no, the wealthy have done nothing wrong nor have they stolen their wealth from the less successful fractions of the American population. They have simply adapted to- and succeeded in navigating the shifts in wealth generation in these modern, global times.

So it’s 2014 and, like the 1st day of every year, people get busy dreaming of- making predictions about what the new year we’ll hold for them and for the societies that they live within.

I’m not really any different; I too place an arbitrary importance upon the new year even though I know that such temporal compartmentalization is illusion.

My prediction – safe, stolid, and lame as it is – is that 2014 will be the beginning of people finally noticing that we have been and are continuing, in an accelerating manner, to move rapidly into an automaton’s Utopia. At least that’s how I see it going in America.

An Automaton’s Utopia – 100% “Employment”

The constant drumbeats from the Left of raising wages and demanding greater and more comprehensive benefits for any and all employees combined with the needs to compete with foreign companies which do not suffer from these problems will continue to drive companies into greater and greater levels of automation.

Andy Puzder, the CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of the fast-food chains, Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr., makes this point very clear.

When they talk about raising the minimum wage or providing health care for employees over 30 hours, you’re really encouraging automation.

Of course, what is a Utopia for our friendly automata is likely to be cruel and harsh Dystopia for those people living within America’s borders who will find themselves replaced by more efficient and less humanesque “workers” and practices.

If America couldn’t have expanded westward, would the Civil War happened? Would it have happened without that opportunity for a massive trade imbalanced based upon the divergent costs of labor under respectively slave-holding and purely freemen societies?

Prima facie, this seems to be useless musing but it truly isn’t. It may be a very important question.

Face facts, the Civil War wasn’t a war to free the Black slaves per se. Nobody of any consequence wanted those slaves freed and even the rank and file Abolitionists favored a fanciful deportation / repatriation strategy.

Both the Civil War and most of the serious problems that led up to it were over allowing slavery to expand westward, either by the Southern states or, after the Secession, by a foreign nation. Business interests in the non-Slave states knew that they couldn’t compete against slave labor.

That was then and this is now, and that now includes America not being able to effectively against China, to lesser extent the rest of Asia, and the Developing World where, once again, what amounts to slave labor is used.

That is certainly worthy of consideration.

The simple fact that America’s government-run school system is broken and that educational failure is their sole legacy can’t be truthfully argued against. The only arguments that can be engaged in are: why? who’s to blame? and how do we fix or remake it?

It’s easy to blame technology. After all, why should teachers actual teach what students can use modern technology to do for them instead?

But They Didn’t Teach Us That In Ethnomathematics! 😳

I don’t think it’s fair to blame technology though since the average child in America could recite chapter and verse of the Liberals’ politically correct versions of history and sociology how America was wrong and how the country was based upon the evils of: racism, xenophobia, homophobia, religion, nationalism, and capitalism.

Oh yes! Religion (except for Islam post 9/11), nationalism, and capitalism are taught as “evils” in the modern (re)education camps the Liberals demand we call schools.

That same child could also likely parrot his “teachers'” chimera that teaching math and science and testing on those subjects is racist because it can’t take into account the differences in cultural backgrounds of non-White students. He or she could also offer strikingly similar rationalizations as why all the “teaching” was done to the lowest common denominators in his or her class.

No. Technology may be an enabler in this educational failure but it’s not the cause. The cause is the Liberals’ desire to indoctrinate children into their anti-American ideology.

That’s Obama for you. The boy is almost stereotypical in his refusal to accept any responsibility for failure. So he’s continuing his claims that America lacks jobs because we’re lazy.

The Boy Still Says We’re Lazy

This time Obama is up on his soapbox claiming that Americans have been too lazy when it comes to, “Selling America and trying to attract new businesses into America.”

Truth be told, I’m not sure if Obama really believes that or if he’s just mouthing whatever his campaign managers and handlers are feeding him through the teleprompter. In either case though, it’s a ridiculous and irresponsible statement.

It fits his profile though. The Campaigner-in-Chief can hardly be expected to admit that labor unions, corporate taxes, and costly regulations – and the uncertain future costs caused by ObamaCare – have not only priced America workers off the global market but made America a very business unfriendly locale. After all, he got elected by running a high taxes, high regulation, pro-Union, anti-business ticket.
