Reflections From a Murky Pond

Today is the Asian Lunar New Year and the beginning of the Year Of The Rabbit.

So… Relax, Think Happy Thoughts, Get Lucky, And Make Some Babies?

Yes, in China and across most of Asia, this now the Year Of The Rabbit, specifically the Water Rabbit. It is considered the luckiest zodiac year, characterized by peaceful and patient energy, good luck, creativity, and fertility.

But, in Vietnam, It’s The Year Of The Cat

As I wrote though, it’s the Year Of The Rabbit across most of Asia. In Vietnam – possibly because of odd crossovers between the pronunciation of rabbit in Mandarin and the written form in Kmer; possibly because the Vietnamese have a longstanding and not unexpected bias against the Chinese – this is the start of the Year Of The Cat.

So, so as to both limit Chinese cultural tyranny and to make some inroads against my own personal anti-Vietnamese bias, here’s some fine cats as well. After all, 50 years is a bit long to hang on to that level of hate. 😉

Sometimes, what each of needs is a box full of kittens. In my case and at this exact time, however, the box full of kittens I’m providing is a Dropbox full of Nekomusume aka Catgirls.

Yeah, too many projects going on at the same time and my Dropbox is full for the moment and still have to work with more files. Hence, giving up to the internet a bunch of seriously cute kittens. 😆

Nekos – Kemonomusume No Joō

Nekos, short for Nekomimi (Cat Ears) or the more proper Nekomusume (Cat Daughters) are by most metrics the queens of Beast Girls (Kemonomusume) in anime, manga, and weeb culture.

And really? Why not? They’re worthy of our homage. Nyan, Baby, Nyan! 😆

Yes, Please! While I’m not that inspired by catnip – though I do grow it in my front garden to attract the neighborhood kitties – I’d love it if somehow I could be taken to where the girls are kitties. 😉

Nekomusume are Nekogami

PRO TIP: Don’t be that Weeb! Or, if you prefer, don’t be a Baka Minikui Gaijin! Treat those Cat Daughters (Nekomusume) like the Cat Goddesses (Nekogami) that they are. You’ll go farther that way and won’t be quite so much of a painful-to-witness embarrassment.

NOTE: The much more common term would be simply Baka Gaijin (Stupid/foolish [non-Asian] Foreigner). I chose to make the point stronger by adding Minikui (ugly in the sense of being painful to see). It also is a riff on the longstanding “Ugly American” stereotype.

Also, just as a personal note on language, idiom, and the subtle shadings of meaning and expectation, I prefer Nekomusume (Cat Daughters) over the equally or more common term, Nekomimi (Cat Ears). Both, however, are in very common use when describing Cat Girls.
