So, it’s time for Dragon*Con 2022, which is almost a wonder in and of itself since the panicdemic crashed the entire sci fiction convention circuit. But this convention is still on, though one could call it almost in Dracolich form now, with attendance limited to less than half of what it used to, masking and social distancing being enforced, and much of it being virtual now.

Still, alive or undead, I tip my hat to the con’s organizers for all the hard work and heartache they’ve gone through to keep this convention in the world. And yes! This does mean that cosplay is still in the world, with the prurient wonders it brings to us.

My Favorite Cosplay – Velma

I spent a lot of years attending and working various Sci-Fi conventions and my wives still do so for a few of them up and down the Eastern Seaboard. It’s, hence, no surprise that I’ve a fondness for cosplay. And my sort of favorite cosplay is Velma from Scooby-Doo.

Face it, Velma is/was awesome for so many values for the best character. She was the “smart chick” and was seriously plump and curvy – and not ashamed to wear a pleated miniskirt to show off those thicc thighs. That’s a lot of good to be said for the character, especially when she was written in 1969.

COVID: Most & Least Impacted Group

We’ve endured over two years of the Coronavirus pandemic and panicdemic – and certain sorts are committed to keeping it alive for much longer. So, I believe it’s time to take a look at the one group that has, at the same time, been the most and least impacted by China’s plague upon the world – science fiction and fantasy fandom’s Cosplayers.

Cosplayers, many of whom are very focused upon this, were devastated by the disease. Almost all of the venues where they gather were closed and many have not and likely will not reopen. And, on top of that, the general economic scouring caused by the government’s response to COVID-19 gutted a lot of cosplayers and those in cosplays supporting industries ability to participate. So yes, they were in many respects the most impacted group.

On the other hand, they were in some ways the least impacted group. It was and is no stretch or hardship to add a mask to almost any cosplay outfit… assuming, of course, that the outfit doesn’t already include one! 😆

Sailor Moon, both manga and anime, aren’t even in the top 100 of my favorites, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy some excellent and beautiful Sailor Guardian cosplay. And, insofar as I’m concerned, bonus points for their being Black babes, who are a rarity in White-Accessible cosplay venues.
