2014 SOTU Buzz

Microsoft fired up it’s Bing Pulse tool for the second year in order to record real-time audience sentiment during Obama’s fifth SOTU speech. The online voting tool allowed viewers to share their opinions about the speech using a smartphone, PC or tablet.

This year, Microsoft is added some new functions to the tool, including an annotated graph feature that allowed viewers to click on spikes and/or dips in the real-time graphs to see the issues being addressed during the speech that have prompted major reactions.

BING PULSE – 2014 SOTU

Last years SOTU Bing Pulse registered 12.9 million votes, according to Microsoft, and this year’s should have been at least as popular so these are the broadest political polls in existence at this time. The re results are also quite interesting.

Speechcrafting

Firstly, I have to give credit where credit is due. Whatever team of writers developed Obama’s 2014 SOTU speech did a very credible job.  The Overall Intensity Graph show a solid curve of interest that builds well, peaks, and drops off at the end, indicating a good denouement. The pacing of the peaks and valleys of engagement also shows a good pace to the speech.

A Telling Response

The listeners’ responses, broken out by political beliefs, is very telling indeed. There’s a huge and stark disparity between how Democrats viewed Obama’s speech and how both Republicans and Independents did so. It’s quite a dramatic difference.

Democrats held largely uniformly positive views of each of Obama’s talking points, only dipping below the 50% mark on the issues of the War on Terror and continuing to support Israel.  They’ve approval didn’t waver much throughout the speech either, showing far less mean difference in approval rating and engagement from one talking to point to the next than either Republicans or Independents. For the most part, however, while differing in amplitude, Democrats showed the same peaks and valleys of approval as both Republicans and Independents.

Republicans and Independents conversely were, by and large, quite disapproving  of Obama’s talking points during his speech, rising above 50% only when it came to the War on Terror and providing medical benefits to veterans. They were, in fact, both more disapproving of it than the Democrats were approving of it.

One point to make specific note of is that Republicans and Independents responded to the talking points in Obama’s 2014 SOTU speech almost identically. There was almost no statistical variation between them, whereas both differed greatly from the Democrats’ responses.

Women’s Needs

Interestingly, despite the constant contention that women have different needs and priorities than men, the responses and engagement of the respective genders was, talking point by talking point, almost identical. This largely held true even on those parts of Obama’s speech which would normally be considered “women’s issues.”

2014 Economic Blamecast

We can all expect Obama to talk rather extensively about the economy and the “success” of the recovery that he, of course, brought about. We can also expect him to wax pontifical about just who is to blame for any perceived weakness in that recovery.

Shuckin, Jiving, and blaming Old White Men
Obama’s 2014 Economic Blamecast

In other words, Obama could just crib his SOTU speech from any of the many other times he’s made excuses for his utter and abject failure as a POTUS. We’re not going here anything tonight that we haven’t heard time and time again.

And really! Why shouldn’t Obama reiterate his mantra? It’s worked well for him professionally so far. Remember folks, if you think or worse say that it’s even partially Obama’s fault, you’re RACIST!

Obama’s Income Gap

Obama InsecureIn his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, Obama is fully expected to make income inequality, as an example of the evils of the wealthy, the centerpiece of his address. He’s expected to expound upon the income gap and how he’s going to fix it.

The thing is, going by statistics provided by the US Census Bureau, the boy’s first, best option to closing the income gap would be to leave office or, failing that, to shut up and get back on the golf course where he can cause less harm.

Since under Obama’s “guidance” and his and his Liberals’ policies America’s income gap has risen faster than it did under either of the last two POTUS’s and has reached its highest level since the Census started recording it back in 1947, maybe it’s time for the master of the shuck and jive to tap dance his way off the public stage.

Obama's Income Gap - The Worst Ever
Income Gap Soars Under Obama

What’s really going to suck for Obama is that he can’t really blame President Bush. The income cap was flat during his tenure in the White House, not that this will stop Obama from blaming him and anyone else that he fears, loathes, or hates that he can.

Obama’s 2012 SOTC Address

Obamaprompter 2012 Presidential CampaignLast night, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Obama gave his 2012 State Of The Campaign Address to Congress and the electorate. Theoretically this should have been the 2012 State Of The Union Address but the Campaigner-in-Chief doesn’t like to go outside of his experience.

As one would expect of a SOTU Address from any POTUS in an election year, but especially from Obama, the hour+ long speech was far less about the state of the union than it was about the state of Obama’s presidency and his 1099 day-long – as of January 24, 2012 – bid for reelection.

The speech was filled with mis- and disinformation, obfuscations, attacks upon Obama detractors, class warfare, and various attempts to couch Liberal talking points in rhetoric more palatable to the American people. To give Obama his due though, it was one of the better examples of such a speech since Prefect Pontius Pilate washed his hands of a certain, sordid affair in Judea a bit over two millennia ago.

One thing – I found the juxtaposition of calling for the application of military philosophy and doctrine to civilian matters and the subjugation of the individual for the collective a little disturbing.

In a time when both the Left and the Right are worried about the authoritarian shift in government and the militarization of civilian entities it’s quite “tone deaf” of Obama to be using rhetoric that is reminiscent of that surrounding the Volksgemeinschaft.

As for the actual state of the union – Given that Obama’s 2012 SOTC Address was quite similar in many key respects and tone to his 2011 SOTC Address, it reasonable to assume that the actual state of the union is also quite similar to how it was a year ago. Obama has made little progress and America is still stagnating.
