A sobering reminder not only of the harsh realities of war, but of the consequences of our wayward ways as well.

Thanks for sharing this reality check with us.

Dave, thanks for stopping by.

Sacrifice in the cause of good will always be a requirement if that good is to have value and to last. Thomas Paine was right when he said, <i>"That which we achieve too easily, we esteem too lightly."</i> I do not believe we have gone too far down in the worship of Self not too turn around.

Jonolan:

After making a few comments on my blog regarding suffering and loss, I thought I had to check out your blog. By reading some of your comments and this particular article, I have a new appreciation for your words.

Most of us cozy American have no clue about what war is like, about the loss of loved ones, or even the loss of liberty and freedom for which so many of our good men have lost their lives for. I try and go out of my way to thank current military and veterans. Plus, my wife and I will always shed tears when the American flag goes by to begin parades.

It always seems to be some type of sacrifice that is needed for good to happen. It means going beyond our selfishness. Has our country gone too far in the worship of Self? I pray not.

I believe the "gospel cloud" is slowly moving away from our nation and to a new destination-- probably China. No wonder there is a battle regarding the coming Olympics and the passing out of Bibles, etc... Thankful, God is in control

Thanks for your blog. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for stopping by, Patrick. Yeah, it's a small world; my grandfather was at Iwo Jima too, but he came in carrying the 1st batch of mail right after we had supposedly "secured" that end of the island.

Whew... Small world it seems. Both my Father and God Father made it off the rock. They were both assigned to be body guards for the photographer when that (The second photo was taken). I was never able to speak with my Father about any of these things, as he died on a hill side later at Chosen. When my God Father did talk about it, he said very little. Mostly, I learned about what had happened from Major Charles See USMC (Ret.) then Lieutenant. Iwo was a meat grinder to be sure.

God bless all our Veterans, past, present, and future.
