By What Authority?

By what authority – and the only authority that Congress has is granted through the US Constitution – do the Liberals who rule both houses of Congress think they can mandate under threat of fines and imprisonment that every American purchase and maintain health insurance coverage?

By What Authority Does Congress Believe It Can Mandate The Purchase of Health Insurance
The Question That The Liberals In Congress Cannot Answer

Go ahead, write a letter or make a phone call and ask one or more of them. You probably won’t get an answer, but they might give you some money to shut up. 😉

On a similar note the president, and many others before him, are violating the constitution with the appointment of these czars. The power given to czars to make law all on their own is a power that has been stripped from congress. Where is the anger, where is the uproar? Apparently we have moved to a point where the constitution has no meaning. Instead “political capital” will decide who has what powers.

    Jay,

This is what happens when a group of people who are in all ways except the accident of the birth location foreigners take control of America’s government. They have no liking or respect for American values and/or ideals and so violate them as they see fit.

I don’t think it’s so much an issue of American values as much as the fact that they, and the rest of the US government, have been hijacked by corporate interests. This is also not about the two-party system, which is a joke in and of itself, but about the bottom line. As long as the health insurance lobby is pouring dollars into congress, who’s going to question the mandate? This is not about politics. It’s about something far more twisted.

    Aminta,

You’ve bought into Obama and his Liberals’ lies and have been sold a bill of goods that bears little resemblance to reality.

One – Those Insurance Companies aren’t who you think they are, at least not in practice.

Two – The health insurance industry operate at only a 3 – 4% profit margin and a comparatively small market cap.

Three – When all is said and done, the private health insurance companies deny far fewer claims than Medicare does.

The health insurance companies are pouring money into Congress to try to block the current bills because they will likely – and I believe deliberately – destroy the entire private health insurance industry.

Even with a mandate that every American purchase health insurance, the resulting required raise in rates to accommodate the punitive regulations will price coverage off the market – which is where the Public Option comes into play.

  5. Aminta Says:

For the record, I’ve never supported Obama or his healthcare plan. I think the public option is pointless and contrary to what you believe is its purpose, I think it’s just there to let people think there’s some semblance of reform. The public option, no matter how robust, will never stand a chance in a competitive market.
But, to your claim that the insurance industry is not “who i think they are”, meaning they are not evil, my answer is – based on what? As a private for-profit corporations listed on the stock exchange, they have no obligation to offer a moral service. They are not doctors, they are not healthcare providers. They are merely middlemen that have no moral obligation to patients. THEREFORE, I think they have no part to play in any GOVERNMENT discussion of reform. If a private industry wishes to offer a private service, that’s their prerogative. MY problem is that between the high cost of health care and the government’s failure to provide an alternative, patients have NO choice BUT to buy a private plan.
I don’t fault the industry for denying claims – their bottom line is to make a profit, but I DO believe this is what they do: there is enough evidence of people that are denied based on pre-existing conditions and the like (including myself, for no good reason other than bad credit. Really.)

Next, your claim that the insurance industry is not profiting as much as the liberals would have us believe…well…I’d need to see more figures. As per this chart, it says that medical practitioners are operating at a .3% loss? Sorry, but this just does not seem correct and I’d need to see several corroborating studies before I believe that the health insurance profits are only 3-4%.

As far as medicare vs private insurance in the denying claims category – given the AMA’s recent history, I’m likely to disbelieve anything that comes out of their mouths.

The government regularly over steps its bounds. This has been going on for decades and will continue until the people actually take interest in what is going on. Because the majority of Americans truly are sheep that are easily led by the rhetoric spewing out of whatever administration is in office, nothing will happen until people stop watching their sitcoms and start paying attention to what is going on around them.

This latest move, I think, is more or less meaningless. Maybe I misunderstood something somewhere, but my understanding is that people have to either opt for the government solution or purchase insurance. Honestly, will there be many people in the USA that will refuse both A and B? I don’t think so. This law makes sense overall, but as for authority I totally understand. Regardless, if the health care bill does eventually pass, I predict that most of those that oppose it now will embrace it with open arms in the not so distant future (3 or 4 years).

    Aminta,

My claim the “insurance giants” weren’t who you think that they are wasn’t based upon Good or Evil, just on the factual basis of who is providing and controlling the coverage for the majority of Americans.

As for profitability, please look it up. I based my numbers on market data intended for investors. It showed a piss-poor profit margin and cap for the entirety of the health insurance industry.
