Not exactly automatically, but he gets his amount from those delegates as if Romney had not run in the first place.

thisisbunk.wordpress.com
why do you want my email?

anyway...the delegates that are bound can become unbound as well.
if there is no clear winner after a few ballots, most every state will have released the delegates commitment to any certain candidate and can vote for whom they wish.

without 1191 bound delegates in september no man has the nomination.
as far as Romney's delegates are concerned I am not sure. McCain does not automatically get them as far as I knew.

Jonolan,

You did a great job of explaining that through your posts. I meant, "Why the discrepancy between the operating system of the two parties?"

Christy,

The difference is that when a Democrat suspends his campaign, he keeps his delegates and has a very big say in who they are later reassigned to. The Republicans instead reallocate the suspended campaign's delegates without input from the ex-candidate.

(I managed to go about my workday without hearing this at all - impressive, eh? Good thing I checked in here. Good grief. I need to get out from under this work rock I'm apparently hiding under, haha.)

It's not quite the same as when a Democrat does it. The Republican National Party will redistribute Romney's delegates unlike Edwards, who retains his and gets a say in their later reallocation.
